Toxics. 2024;(3)
Abstract
Efficient removal of extremely mobile and toxic As(III) from water is a challenging but critical task. Herein, we developed a functionalized sorbent of chitosan nanofiber with iron-manganese (Fe-Mn@CS NF) using a one-step hybrid electrospinning approach to remove trace As(III) from water. Batch adsorption studies were performed to determine the adsorption efficiency under a variety of conditions, including contact time, starting concentration of As(III), ionic strength, and the presence of competing anions. The experimental results demonstrated that the concentration of As(III) dropped from 550 to less than 1.2 µg/L when using 0.5 g/L Fe-Mn@CS NF. This demonstrates the exceptional adsorption efficiency (99.8%) of Fe-Mn@CS NF for removing As(III) at pH 6.5. The kinetic tests revealed that the adsorption equilibrium was reached in 2.6 h, indicating a quick uptake of As(III). The ionic strength effect analysis showed that the adsorbed As(III) formed inner-sphere surface complexes with Fe-Mn@CS NF. The presence of SO42- or F- had a negligible impact on As(III) uptake, while the presence of PO43- impeded As(III) absorption by competing for adsorption sites. The exhausted sorbent could be effectively regenerated with a dilute NaOH solution. Even after 10 cycles of regenerating Fe-Mn@CS NF, the adsorption efficiency of As(III) in natural groundwater was maintained over 65%. XPS and FTIR analyses show that the presence of M-OH and C-O groups on the sorbent surface is essential for removing As(III) from water. Overall, our study highlights the significant potential of Fe-Mn@CS NF for the efficient and quick elimination of As(III) from water.

Nutrients. 2024;(1)
Abstract
Many epidemiological studies have evaluated the intake of macronutrients and the risk of mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, current evidence is conflicting and warrants further investigation. Therefore, we carried out an umbrella review to examine and quantify the potential dose-response association of dietary macronutrient intake with CVD morbidity and mortality. Prospective cohort studies from PubMed, Embase, and CENTRAL were reviewed, which reported associations of macronutrients (protein, fat, and carbohydrate) with all-cause, CVD, cancer mortality, or CVD events. Multivariable relative risks (RR) were pooled, and heterogeneity was assessed. The results of 124 prospective cohort studies were included in the systematic review and 101 in the meta-analysis. During the follow-up period from 2.2 to 30 years, 506,086 deaths and 79,585 CVD events occurred among 5,107,821 participants. High total protein intake was associated with low CVD morbidity (RR 0.88, 95% confidence interval 0.82-0.94), while high total carbohydrate intake was associated with high CVD morbidity (1.08, 1.02-1.13). For fats, a high intake of total fat was associated with a decreased all-cause mortality risk (0.92, 0.85-0.99). Saturated fatty acid intake was only associated with cancer mortality (1.10, 1.06-1.14); Both monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) intake was associated with all-cause mortality (MUFA: 0.92, 0.86-0.98; PUFA 0.91, 0.86-0.96). This meta-analysis supports that protein intake is associated with a decreased risk of CVD morbidity, while carbohydrate intake is associated with an increased risk of CVD morbidity. High total fat intake is associated with a low risk of all-cause mortality, and this effect was different in an analysis stratified by the type of fat.

Materials (Basel, Switzerland). 2024;(6)
Abstract
The second-phase particles in magnesium alloys could affect the mechanical properties of the material significantly. In this work, 3D finite element models with explicit incorporation of second-phase particles are established. The simulations are calibrated with the experimental results of the Mg-1Gd alloy. The influences of factors, such as the particle distribution, size, and orientation of cylindrical particles, on precipitation hardening are investigated in detail. Three interface conditions between particles and the matrix-perfect bonding and high- and low-strength bonding-are studied at the same time. The interface conditions are shown to exert a stronger influence on precipitation hardening compared to the factors of particle distribution and size. In contrast, the influence of the orientation of cylindrical particles at grain boundaries outweighs the effect of interface property. When second-phase particles are relatively large and all located at grain boundaries, the hardening effect can be improved, and the magnesium alloy shows relatively high flow stress. However, the high hardening effect from the second-phase particles could result in high local stress concentration and possible early failure or low ductility of Mg alloys.

Abstract
As China's coal mines have transitioned to deep mining, the ground stress within the coal seams has progressively increased, resulting in reduced permeability and poor wetting ability of conventional wetting agents. Consequently, these agents have become inadequate in fulfilling the requirements for preventing washouts during deep mining operations. In response to the aforementioned challenges, a solution was proposed to address the issues by formulating a composite wetting agent. This composite wetting agent combines a conventional surfactant with a chelating agent called tetrasodium iminodisuccinate (IDS). By conducting a meticulous screening of surfactant monomer solutions, the ideal formulation for the composite wetting agent was determined by combining the monomer surfactant with IDS. Extensive testing, encompassing evaluations of the composite solution's apparent strain, contact angle measurements, and alterations in the oxygenated functional groups on the coal surface, led to the identification of the optimal composition. This composition consisted of IDS serving as the chelating agent and fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether (JFCS).Subsequent assessment of the physical and mechanical performance of the coal briquettes treated with the composite wetting agent revealed notable enhancements. These findings signify significant advancements in the field and hold promising implications. Following the application of the composite wetting agent, notable reductions were observed in the dry basis ash and dry basis full sulfur of coal. Additionally, the water content within the coal mass increased significantly, leading to a substantial enhancement in the wetting effect of the coal body. This enhanced wetting effect effectively mitigated the coal body's inclination towards impact, thereby offering technical support for optimizing water injection into coal seams and preventing as well as treating impact ground pressure.

Frontiers in cardiovascular medicine. 2024;:1353533
Abstract
Mitochondria-associated membrane (MAM) serve as crucial contact sites between mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Recent research has highlighted the significance of MAM, which serve as a platform for various protein molecules, in processes such as calcium signaling, ATP production, mitochondrial structure and function, and autophagy. Cardiac diseases caused by any reason can lead to changes in myocardial structure and function, significantly impacting human health. Notably, MAM exhibits various regulatory effects to maintain cellular balance in several cardiac diseases conditions, such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, and cardiotoxicity. MAM proteins independently or interact with their counterparts, forming essential tethers between the ER and mitochondria in cardiomyocytes. This review provides an overview of key MAM regulators, detailing their structure and functions. Additionally, it explores the connection between MAM and various cardiac injuries, suggesting that precise genetic, pharmacological, and physical regulation of MAM may be a promising strategy for preventing and treating heart failure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parenteral nutrition (PN) and palliative venting gastrostomies (PVG) are two interventions used clinically to manage inoperable malignant bowel obstruction (MBO); however, little is known about their role in clinical and quality-of-life outcomes to inform clinical decision making. AIM: To examine the impact of PN and PVG on clinical and quality-of-life outcomes in inoperable MBO. DESIGN A mixed-methods systematic review and narrative synthesis. DATA SOURCES The following databases were searched (from inception to 29 April 2021): MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, CINAHL, Bielefeld Academic Search Engine, Health Technology Assessment and CareSearch for qualitative or quantitative studies of MBO, and PN or PVG. Titles, abstracts and papers were independently screened and quality appraised. RESULTS A total of 47 studies representing 3538 participants were included. Current evidence cannot tell us whether these interventions improve MBO survival, but this was a firm belief by patients and clinicians informing their decision. Both interventions appear to allow patients valuable time at home. PVG provides relief from nausea and vomiting. Both interventions improve quality of life but not without significant burdens. Nutritional and performance status may be maintained or improved with PN. CONCLUSION PN and PVG seem to allow valuable time at home. We found no conclusive evidence to show either intervention prolonged survival, due to the lack of randomised controlled trials that have to date not been performed due to concerns about equipoise. Well-designed studies regarding survival for both interventions are needed. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42020164170.

Zheng, K, Ma, Y, Chiu, C, Xue, M, Zhang, C, Du, D
Journal of orthopaedic translation. 2024;:140-154
Abstract
BACKGROUND Cartilage tissue engineering faces challenges related to the use of scaffolds and limited seed cells. This study aims to propose a cost-effective and straightforward approach using costal chondrocytes (CCs) as an alternative cell source to overcome these challenges, eliminating the need for special culture equipment or scaffolds. METHODS CCs were cultured at a high cell density with and without ascorbic acid treatment, serving as the experimental and control groups, respectively. Viability and tissue-engineered constructs (TEC) formation were evaluated until day 14. Slices of TEC samples were used for histological staining to evaluate the secretion of glycosaminoglycans and different types of collagen proteins within the extracellular matrix. mRNA sequencing and qPCR were performed to examine gene expression related to cartilage matrix secretion in the chondrocytes. In vivo experiments were conducted by implanting TECs from different groups into the defect site, followed by sample collection after 12 weeks for histological staining and scoring to evaluate the extent of cartilage regeneration. Hematoxylin-eosin (HE), Safranin-O-Fast Green, and Masson's trichrome stainings were used to examine the content of cartilage-related matrix components in the in vivo repair tissue. Immunohistochemical staining for type I and type II collagen, as well as aggrecan, was performed to assess the presence and distribution of these specific markers. Additionally, immunohistochemical staining for type X collagen was used to observe any hypertrophic changes in the repaired tissue. RESULTS Viability of the chondrocytes remained high throughout the culture period, and the TECs displayed an enriched extracellular matrix suitable for surgical procedures. In vitro study revealed glycosaminoglycan and type II collagen production in both groups of TEC, while the TEC matrix treated with ascorbic acid displayed greater abundance. The results of mRNA sequencing and qPCR showed that genes related to cartilage matrix secretion such as Sox9, Col2, and Acan were upregulated by ascorbic acid in costal chondrocytes. Although the addition of Asc-2P led to an increase in COL10 expression according to qPCR and RNA-seq results, the immunofluorescence staining results of the two groups of TECs exhibited similar distribution and fluorescence intensity. In vivo experiments showed that both groups of TEC could adhere to the defect sites and kept hyaline cartilage morphology until 12 weeks. TEC treated with ascorbic acid showed superior cartilage regeneration as evidenced by significantly higher ICRS and O'Driscoll scores and stronger Safranin-O and collagen staining mimicking native cartilage when compared to other groups. In addition, the immunohistochemical staining results of Collgan X indicated that, after 12 weeks, the ascorbic acid-treated TEC did not exhibit further hypertrophy upon transplantation into the defect site, but maintained an expression profile similar to untreated TECs, while slightly higher than the sham-operated group. CONCLUSION These results suggest that CC-derived scaffold-free TEC presents a promising method for articular cartilage regeneration. Ascorbic acid treatment enhances outcomes by promoting cartilage matrix production. This study provides valuable insights and potential advancements in the field of cartilage tissue engineering. THE TRANSLATIONAL POTENTIAL OF THIS ARTICLE Cartilage tissue engineering is an area of research with immense clinical potential. The approach presented in this article offers a cost-effective and straightforward solution, which can minimize the complexity of cell culture and scaffold fabrication. This simplification could offer several translational advantages, such as ease of use, rapid scalability, lower costs, and the potential for patient-specific clinical translation. The use of costal chondrocytes, which are easily obtainable, and the scaffold-free approach, which does not require specialized equipment or membranes, could be particularly advantageous in clinical settings, allowing for in situ regeneration of cartilage.

Frontiers in public health. 2024;:1308745
Abstract
BACKGROUND Although several guidelines for cardiovascular disease (CVD) management have highlighted the significance of primary prevention, the execution and adherence to lifestyle modifications and preventive medication interventions are insufficient in everyday clinical practice. The utilization of effective risk communication can assist individuals in shaping their perception of CVD risk, motivating them to make lifestyle changes, and increasing their willingness to engage with preventive medication, ultimately reducing their CVD risks and potential future events. However, there is limited evidence available regarding the optimal format and content of CVD risk communication. OBJECTIVE The pilot study aims to elucidate the most effective risk communication strategy, utilizing message framing (gain-framed, loss-framed, or no-framed), for distinct subgroups of risk perception (under-perceived, over-perceived, and correctly-perceived CVD risk) through a multi-center randomized controlled trial design. METHODS A multi-center 3 × 3 factorial, observer-blinded experimental design was conducted. The participants will be assigned into three message-framing arms randomly in a 1:1:1 ratio and will receive an 8-week intervention online. Participants are aged 20-80 years old and have a 10-year risk of absolute CVD risk of at least 5% (moderate risk or above). We plan to enroll 240 participants based on the sample calculation. The primary outcome is the CVD prevention behaviors and CVD absolute risk value. Data collection will occur at baseline, post-intervention, and 3-month follow-up. DISCUSSION This experimental study will expect to determine the optimal matching strategy between risk perception subgroups and risk information format, and it has the potential to offer health providers in community or clinic settings a dependable and efficient health communication information template for conducting CVD risk management.Clinical trial registration: https://www.chictr.org.cn/bin/project/edit?pid=207811, ChiCTR2300076337.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Existing evidence on the possible effects of probiotics on obese or overweight adolescents has not been fully established. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the effects of probiotic supplementation on anthropometric indices, inflammatory markers and metabolic indices in obese or overweight adolescents. METHODS The literature up to March 2023 related to probiotic intervention in obese or overweight adolescents was searched and screened from multiple databases, including the CNKI(China national knowledge infrastructure), CBM(Chinese biomedical literature database), PubMed, EmBase, and Cochrane library databases. All randomized controlled trials using probiotic supplements in obese or overweight adolescents were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. RESULTS A total of 8 studies that met the inclusion criteria were included in this study. There were 201 cases in the experimental group (probiotic treatment) and 190 cases in the control group. Compared to the control group, probiotic intervention in adolescents resulted in a decrease in body mass index, fasting blood glucose and C-reactive protein with WMD(Weighted mean difference) and 95% CI of -2.53 (-4.8 to -0.26) kg/m2, -0.80 (-1.13 to -0.47) mol/L and -0.24 (-0.43 to -0.05) mg/L, respectively. No significant changes were found in weight, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, insulin, Homeostatic Model Assessment of insulin resistance, interleukin 6, tumor necrosis factor alpha and so on; however, an unfavorable elevated effect in total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoproteins was detected with WMD and 95% CI of 0.06 (0.02 to 0.09) mmol/L, 0.18 (0.14 to 0.21) mmol/L, and 0.19 (0.18 to 0.20) mmol/L, respectively. CONCLUSION According to our results, probiotic supplementation was beneficial in managing metabolic indicators such as fasting blood glucose, body mass index and inflammation-related C-reactive protein in overweight or obese adolescents. Further large scale studies are warranted to confirm present findings and to identify the effects and mechanisms to provide more precise evidence for clinical intervention.
